On Thursday we went to Port Richmond. We had a tour guide from the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority that took us to the area on the waterfront where they import and export goods. Many come from companies such as Hamburg, CGA, CNG and Sea Star. Our guide told us that meat and food goods are imported. Things like fruit, paper and everyday used items are imported. Sometimes even live stock such as animals. Most of the area is ran by heavy machinery. They use a two hundred foot crane to transport the crates onto the the cargo ships.

Last Friday, Augugst 6th, my group and I went on a trip to Port Richmond. After getting on the tour bus with no air conditioning I already had little faith that this trip would be fun. We were soon introduced to our tour guide Ryan who did a good job of informing us of how the entire operation works. Our first destination was to the Packer Ave Marine Terminal. We saw that vehicles from Japan were just unloaded and when we got to the Packer Ave port we saw that there was hundreds of huge containers. We were told that a variety of things get shipped in to this port like meats, pharmaceuticals, even animals and much more. While we were there we got to see the cranes load and unload cargo to and from a ship. After that we went and visited the Tioga Marine Terminal and saw that mainly fruit and vegetation comes to this port. There were also dozens of other ports and warehouses on the Delaware that served several different purposes of shipping like a paper mill and a cocoa bean warehouse.

The Port Richmond Visit was very Mind blowing. i did not know that many things were going on in this particular company. i learned a lot of things such as where most of the things are imported from , where things go & how they are stored. i Saw many boxes climbed on to each other stacked to the sky,and the workers doing there construction work. it Looked very interesting even though it was on a very very hot day. We learned alot about factories and companies and what they do on a daily basis.

Ports of Philadelphia

On Friday our group took tour of the ports that import through Philadelphia. Instead of walking we changed up and used a tour bus and guide. We looked at the ports and what came into them. All types of different exports came in. (examples) trains, cars, fruit, cattle, etc. We also looked at the equipment used to get the exports off the ships. There are giant cranes that take off the crates, machines to move the crates, and trucks to distribute the crates. Businesses hire people to make sure the cargo is handled correctly. There is machinery to handled other parts of this process like when cocoa beans (which is held in sacks) have metal in them in order to get more for the pound. There are machines to take them out. With all the info and seeing the ports in action, it looks like a well handled establishment. It would be helped by digging a deeper canal even if it hurts the environment.

Thursday, August 5 we went on a trip to Port Richmond. We rode around on a hot shuttle bus that had no air conditioning with a person who works at the Philadelphia Port Authority. We learned how things are shipped in and out of Philadelphia and how they sort them out to go certain places. We went to the Tioga Marine and Packer Terminal where they ship fruits, cars and other things like McDonalds hamburger meat. I use to always ride pass them with my mother and wonder what it was and now I know.

On our trip to Port-Richmond was very boring and unnecessary because all we learned about was how the counter’s was shipped back and forth from there to another place. I really didn’t like it because it was a waste of time and it was unfair how ryan let the other to groups on the van with the air-condition and we had to get on the van with no air, and it felt like my group and I was bout to die until the nice van driver brought us all waters because we was without any air unless we was on the highway.

When We Went To Port Richmond I Found It Fun To Learn About Shipping and What Get Shipped. Everything Can Get Shipped From Little Things Such As Co-Co Beans To Big Thing Such As Alive Animals Such As Cows. Anything Can Get Ship(with a little cost) But However Big It IS The More Its Going To Cost. Foods can Also Be Shipped And So That They The Food Will Not Get Spoiled They Have A Freezer So That It Dong , And I Think That Is A Good Idea. In Conclusion That What i Think About Our Trip To Port Richmond.

My group and I took a trip Port Richmond, we went through a tour and our tour guide was a person that works at the Philadelphia Port Authority. The Philadelphia Port Authority is a company that mostly controls shipping and receiving ports. We on a tour bus which had no air conditioning, and I was burning up. We went to different stops through the Tioga Marine Terminal, and I saw alot of ports. I learned that the Tioga Marine Terminal receives and ships food product and clothes from different countries. I learned that the hamburger meat from McDonald’s is originally from Australia.

-Dredging the Delaware River
The main problem of doing this to the Delaware is because about 100 or so miles of the Delaware River is a shipping channel but river dredging is not willing to give up anything towards this project because on their half they thinks its bad. In my opinion on this article I think instead if fighting over the situation because its only making matter worst, they should just sit down and have a meeting about it because if they take matters into they own hands things are not going to end well.

-Building a Casino along the Delaware River Waterfront in Philadelphia
There are good and bad things that can come out of this. The good thing is that it offers more people in Philadelphia jobs and tourist something else to visit or when the come to the city of Philadelphia. The bad is that the economy is at a struggle right now and building a casino is not a good idea as of right now. Also, because it just might add more pollution to the water.

Water plays a major role for many cities. I read two articles that shows waters importance to a civilation and all of the possible benefits water has to offer. The first article i read was the one about dredging the Delaware River. It basically told me about how the city wanted to deepen the floor of the Delaware River. Digging would make the river over 40 to 45 feet deeper allowing bigger boats and ships to enter and sail along the Delaware River. Although this seems like a great idea, enviornmentalist believe that digging up the dirt on the floor of the river could pollute both the river and the land and air where ever the mud would be stored. Another article I read told me about the financial side of this project. Appearently, this project would cost a little over a $300 million dollars. Also that same article let me know that dredging of the Delaware River will stretch for almost 108 miles.

Building a casino along the Delaware River waterfront in Philadelphia

• The challenges listed by the team representatives include: Our severely struggling economy. The lingering perception among Philadelphians ,who have seen riverfront plans come and go without changing much – that nothing will ever happen But they may be wrong.
• Building a Casino along the Delaware waterfront would be a good and bad idea. It would be bad because The river is dirty enough, with a casino along it its going to get more dirtier and the river would be filled with trash bottles and poker chips.
• Teams are competing to create the Central Delaware Waterfronts Master Plan to hold the same position on at least these things: Creating and implementing the blueprint which won't be easy. And it will not be fast at all.

1.) Dredging the Delaware
An issue of the Delaware River are 102.5 miles of the main shipping channel of the Delaware, and an additional depth of 5 ft. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are planned to be prepared to take on a project that is being hailed as an opportunity to promote shipping to ports along both shorelines. But complications rise as opponents of the river dredging project are refusing to give an inch. In my opinion I think that fighting over part of the Delaware River, can end up badly, these rivals need to find a way to work together with their actions and opinions, so it can end up in a good resolution.

2.) Drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale
Shale gas trapped deep underground is considered one of the most promising sources of U.S. energy, but environmentalists and small-town neighbors of drilling operations -- and now the biggest city in the United States are seeking to limit its exploitation. In my opnion about the article I understand how environmentalists and small-town neighbors are worried that this drilling for natural gas may cause explosion, but finding this natural gas can be good for earth so it wont cause more global warming.

Drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale !

• The process of natural gas well drilling has potential to have an impact on drinking water sources. The most recent discoveries of natural gas reserves held within the Marcellus Shale formation and the use of new horizontal drilling methods to tap these reserves are expected to increase dramatically the drilling operations and gas recovery efforts in the Pacific region.

• A single gas well can utilize and produce hundreds and hundreds of thousands of gallons of fluids during drilling operations and during the years of Natural gas productions. Pre-gas well drilling & water testing of private wells and springs is a necessary step. This is necessary for the simple fact to establish a baseline for the water quality of the water source.

• At this present Time, both Pennsylvania and New York City are Actually evaluating regulatory recommendations for water quality testing. This will help Things in the water And also around it to Stay Clean And healthy.

Where My Water Comes From

I learned that my water comes from two water treatment plants in Philadelphia, the Baxter and Queen Lane Plant. The Baxter Plant is gets its water from the Delaware River and the Queen Lane Plant gets its water from the Schuylkill River. There are potentially five things that endanger the water the plants use.
1) Trash
2) Antifreeze/oil
3) Storm Water
4) Feces/Urine
5) Toxic Chemicals

Fairmount Waterworks

Friday when we went to Philadelphia water works I learned a lot of new things .One new thing that I learned pipes were first made out of wood and that was in the early 1800’s, and that was to distribute water thought out the whole Philadelphia area. Also Philadelphia use 450 million gallons of water in a day due to major causes such as washing up, and using the bathroom, and other things. Secondly, I found out that they build dams to help give people water and also to change direction of the water so that it can move all over. However, with them building the dams I start interacting with the fish migrating from one side of the river to another, so that’s what cause them to build a fish latter. And the fish latter is to help fishes get from one place to another because the dam was giving off to much energy and the fish couldn’t jump it. And that’s what I learned when we went to the Philadelphia water works.

Last week we went to the Fairmount water works. The walk was long and hot on the trail they could uses bathrooms and water fountains. When we arrived they gave us a tour and I learned that pipes was made out of wood in the 1800’s.I also learned what a fish ladder is and how they are used. I found out that the Fairmount water works had to close dew to pollution. I also found out that the Fairmount water works was the first place to distribute water in the world. I had a great time just chill with my group

The Fairmount Water Works Visit Was very interesting. The place seemed like it has a lot going on there in the summer time but also in the winter! They had a big stage rite there next to the river which I’m guessing a lot of stars come and do shows there. The river Stunk and was very dirty it seemed I don’t understand how they can do shows there with that and also in between with the big boats going passed throughout the day. I Guess they would just have to deal with it and go on with the show !

Last Friday while we we’re at the Fairmount waterfront we learned that the big trash collage represents the trash that people are throwing in the water. Also the bunch of rusted sinks shown the way how the upper stream are using the water more better then the lower and the sinks had the different names of the cities such as Philadelphia Delaware etc. Next the fish ladder was used for many things it is contains water such as an apple contains 95 percent of water. Then the movie explained how the dam was used for different things concerning the water. Lastly there are 3 main facilities

On Friday we visited the Fairmount Waterworks Museum. it took us what felt like forever to get there. I learned what a fish ladder was used for. Many things contain water, such as trees, apples, people and elephants. For example, an apple contains 95% of water. there was also a sculpture of trash. It symbolized how people make the oceans polluted with trash and other items. When we were done looking at the sculpture, our tour guide took us to a board that showed us how much pollution that we are dumping into the ocean everyday. Next, we saw how fish migrate using the fish ladder. The movie that we then watched, explained how the damned worked and how it was created and processed over the years. I also learned that there are three main water facilities where the water travels through. The dam was being built in the 1800's to make the water go in a different direction so it could be able to get to us. It's powered by hydro power.

5 Things I've Learned From The Fairmount Waterworks

1.) First thing I've learned from the Fairmount Waterwork was that when the Fairmount Waterworks was first invented in the 1800's the pipes were made out of wood.
2.) Second thing I've learned from the Fairmount Waterworks is that there is more than one million gallons of water used everyday in Philadelphia.
3.) Thrid thing I've learned from the Fairmount Waterworks in 1810 Fairmount Waterworks was invented to prevent the Yellow Fever from spreading after it killed one-thrid of Philadelphia's population (which was caused from drinking dirty and contaminated water).
4.) The fourth thing I've learned about the Fairmount Waterworks that Philadelphia was the first state to distribute water
5.) The last thing I've learned about the Fairmount Waterworks is that if the fish are still in the water and alive that means that our water is still pure and clean.

Last Friday, July, 30th, I and my group members visited the Fairmount WaterWorks. We first took a long walk from 30th and Market to the location of the Fairmount WaterWorks along side of the Schuylkill River. After taking this walk a second time I felt as though I learned only a few new things about the area of the Schuylkill River. When we reached the Fairmount WaterWorks we walked through this well landscaped area and the Fairmount WaterWorks looked something like a mansion. I learned dozens of things while we went on this tour of the WaterWorks. I learned that at its time the Fairmount WaterWorks was the best technology of its time. I also learned that a brilliant man by the name of Frederick Graff made the Fairmount WaterWorks. I learned that because of the Fairmount WaterWorks Philadelphia had the first public water service and that the pipes were first made from wood until they switched them with metal pipes. It also surprised me that the Fairmount WaterWorks was the most profitable business of its time for over nine decades.

Friday we ventured to the Fairmount Water Works Museum. We used the same path we used when we went to the Art Museum a few weeks earlier. As we walked this we talked about how this park was used and how it could be improved. Many people used it mostly for recreaction ex. (biking, picnics, etc..) The one issue that was adress was the railroad traffic. It was hard to access the other side of the tracks. There was also a lack of water fountains and restrooms. However, there were many areas these places could of been used.

As we approached the Water Works we looked at many thinga surrounding it. The water fall and where people lived above, how the museum was built like a house, the wildlife in the water and how pollutted the water was.

Finally when we got into the museum we learned where water was transferred after its use. There are three different water treatment facillities in Philadelphia. The facillity that treats my water is the Baxter Treatment Facillity. We watched a movie on the history of the Water Works. It made Philadelphia the frst to make water transportation a municipal responsibility. It was closed down because of its pollution. It was so polluted that not only did it spread yellow fever that the water actually turned black. The Water Works was turned to a swimming pool and transformed into an aquarium. However it ended up being a historical landmark and forever a museum to show how Philadelphia started its water system transportion

So everyone was sweating and pretty much in a bad mood. The bugs out there were everywhere and very vicious. Even Though all of this occurred we still got passed it and had a pretty good time. I Was Pretty hungry & Couldn't wait to get home to eat & my heeks were hurting from laughing soo much with the ppl in my group !

on Friday we went to Wissahickon Park Trail. We went to see the cave on Hermit Lane. He built it because he thought that the world was supposed to end so he lived in it. We had to answer questions about what we observed in the park area. The steps that we walked to get in the park were quite tiring. But it the end it was fun because I got paid.

Friday we went to the Wissachickon park. I did not enjoy myself because it was very hot and tiring. We went up this steep hill to look at this little cave called Hermit Lane, I was to scared to go inside so I just looked at it from a distance. Overall, I did not enjoy myself and I can not see myself going back.

The trip to wissachon was kinda shorta okay because most of the time i was laughing && cracking jokes ! Then they had us walking on this trail that lead through the tree's && things then this man was with his dog && family && i felt upset. at the beginning of the trip i kinda thought unnecessary because it was hot that day and all we was doing was walking around looking at trees, bugs, animals, cars riding by etc. but only certain things was fun while my group members made it fun for me !

There were interesting things I learned while I was at the Wissahickon Park apart from all the horrible and disgusting things that happened on Friday was the Hermit Lane. It was interesting because I learned about the history about the cave and the about the person who built. The man name was Hermit and he was a normal person, until he thought that the world was going to end. He decided to build a cave and live in it. I liked that Wissahickon Park was a place that citizens could relax, do sight-seeing, and exercise (such like running, and bike riding).

On Friday, July 23, 2010, my group and other groups went out to the Wissahickon Park. This was the first time I ever got on a regional rail train, therefore it was a new experience for me. When we got off the train it seemed to me that there is no signaling of any kind to show where the park is exactly. When we got to the park there was a slim strip of concrete that had to be shared with those who walk and ride bikes. It was a very exciting trip, someone went through extreme measures to get a turtle from the water and we saw some different wildlife at the park. Besides the heat and the long walk, the trip wasn't all that bad.

Places We Have Been and Things to Think About

The group has taken a two trips to different places in Philadelphia. We took a walk to the Philadelphia Art Museum. We used a sort of underpass near the water that really shortened the time it would take if we took the parkway. The walkway was nice and It was well used by many citizens in Philadelphia for walking biking even dating.

We looked at different paintings that had different uses of water in them. They showed trade, fishing, and boating. We looked at other art as well and I enjoyed the museum.

The other trip was to the Wissahickon where we looked at the water as well. It wasn't really used by people except for fishing. However, animals where always seen in the water. We took the path up to the Hermit's Cave where a an old german made a small place to hide when he thought the world would end.

These trips last we was fun and very action packed. Even tho it was hot my group and I maintain our composure. On Thursday we went to the art museum I found some of the art interesting but not all tho. I didn't find some of the art interesting because I could relate to some of the art Then Friday at the wissahickon creek one of the place i past by all the time in my travels to school and home. The wissahickon creek is one of my favorite places because I am always at the water fall at the end of the creek. Either chilling with my friends and my fake family the Authentic Affairs Family. The best part is we got paid last Friday LOL

The difference between the two maps was that n the geo-histoy map my street wasn't made yet, but now that its up to date its there on google maps ! Last couple of days was fun, but thats nuffn new because me && my group members ALWAYS have fun ! Love My Group Members !

Today I looked at a map from 1930 and compared to today's map of my house. The only thing that looked the same from both maps was that Point Breeze Ave was still there. I could not really tell the difference between the maps because the map of 1930 is only a grid, it doesn't really go into detail as the map do of today. The map of 1930 only showed the main big streets in Philadelphia.

Today we look at an old map of our neighborhoods. I realized that my house did not even exist on that map. My block was not even established yet. My old school was not there neither. Which got me thinking about how far the United States has come. From a time when there was many tree and little building to a time. Where there are many building and little trees. Its also made me wonder whether would should plant more tree or prepare from doom cause our tree provide our air and without them where would our air come from.

There were many differences between the map of my neighborhood. The fact of the matter is there was no neighborhood. Not mine or anyone else's houses were built in that area. The whole area was just park. It was all apart of Tacony park. The creek used to be much wider than it is now. There was no Olney what-so-ever. No type of businesses or houses mapped so it basically was completely forest.

However now my neighborhood is a bustling, 4 lane traffic, store established part of the city. There are small businesses just started to make a living. There are large corporate businesses with many establishments around the country. Either or, Olney is on the map for being able to supply its and other communities with various goods available in that location.

The real difference between the change from 1930 is that my neighborhood is less green then it once was.

There are a lot of things different Between these two maps. Of course my House or the Houses around me weren't there Or were way different then they are now. The streets were Not called the Same nor were the avenues around my neighborhood . They Were called different things and all the landforms around me weren't there. There are many things that are different shaped and basically nothing was or exactly the same. thank god because then i probably wouldn't live around what i live around today !

Lately we have been focusing on the history and the reasoning for why Philadelphia was created the way it is. Today I got to see how my neighborhood looked from an aerial map in the 1930's. It was in this map that I got to see just how much Philadelphia has really changed. Now Passyunk Avenue used to be Point Breeze Avenue in the 1930's. Another major difference in these maps is that Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park wasn't established in the 1930's. The even major change is that my neighborhood wasn't even built in the 1930's it was all forest area and there was a number of creeks. Now where all the greenery and creeks used to exist are only row homes and huge plazas. Philadelphia has changed a lot.

Today At Work I Was Looking At A Map That Was Made In 1930 And It Look Completely Different From The Way A Map Look Today. The Map From 1930 Have Less Houses From The Map Of Today, I Was Looking At The Maps And I Didn't Even See My Block So That Mean That My Block Wasn't Even Made Until After 1930. Also When I Was Looking At The Maps I Notice That One Of The Avenues That It Have Today (Suck As Passyunk And Snyder). However They Added More Houses to The Country Because The Map From 1930 Have Space Left On It And The Map of Today DONT. And That's The Different Between The Map Of 1930 And The Present Map

Today we tested the water that we collected from Ben Franklin Parkway and discovered that it isnt clean. Some of the water was tainted because the fountain is made of stone and rock. The other water is tainted by people, such as peeing etc. Next, we looked at maps from 1930 and were told to locate our houses. The map from back then and recent time is different. The streets or buildings didn't even exist yet. My house was built in 1962 so it doesn't show on the map.

In our assignment at the computer lab we had to find our community and where we live at in an old map back in the 1930's, and compare it to the present map. The old map is smaller and have less buildings than the present map. There were different landmarks like Rocky Hill, Melrose, Pitville. The present map it's larger than the old map, and the landmarks changed than the old map. In the old map there was more land with parks and grass landmarks, than it was in the present map. During the years constructing more buildings risen up.

On Thursday, we had a trip to the Benjamin Parkway, there we learned about the history of Benjamin Parkway. Back then they reconstructed the Benjamin Parkway to make it look a little like Paris. We went to the LOVE Park first, then walk to Logan Square and I learned that Logan Square used to be a place to execute people, the last execution was in 1722...interesting. While we walked I took samples of leaves for identification, it was a long walk and it was also hot. Our last stop was Rodin Museum, and I saw some beautiful and interesting sculptures that caught my eye.

On Thursday my and two other groups ventured to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Our walk started at Love Park where we met our tour guide who showed up around up to the part of the Rodin Museum.

As we started our walk we looked at how many different statues and trees were along the parkway. Our guide talked about how the parkway was designed to resemble Paris. It did as well as look green with the many young trees planted around the parkway. There were many statues from different artist to decorate the parkway further. It gave it an abstract artistic look with the many different types of art.

At The Rodin Museum there were sculptures capturing the human form in different poses and stances. After which we ventured to the other side of the parkway to view more of what it had to offer. Al in all it was very informational

Yesterday was oddly interesting. I learned things about the history of Philadelphia and its original composition. I gained a new found respect for the art of sculpting. I'm seriously considering going to visit the Rodin Museum again. I read many of the descriptions of the sculptors and the description of their work. My favorite location that we visited was the Rodin Museum. The sculptures were so captivating and the stories they told interested me. We also took a sample of leafs and water from the area of the Benjamin Parkway. Although the weather was quite uncomfortable the trip was fun.

In the beginning it was hot and tiring because it was like 90 degrees outside, but once I got use to it I began to have fun. Inside the museum it was a lot of statues that were pretty cool. We picked leaves from different trees from down the Parkway and got water from the fountain near City Hall. Overall, it was fun.

Today is our second week working with bITs. During the first week, my group members got to know each other by participating in ice breakers. We haven't really did anything yet since its only the second week. On Monday, we sat at Bell Tower and took notes on the people who walked by to get to know the area a little better. Tomorrow, we're going to the Ben Franklin Parkway to take a look at it's surroundings and famous statues, monuments and buildings.

So far weeks one and two of this program was very interesting. I and my group members played games that centered around teaching us about the city of Philadelphia. We also did research about the Benjamin Parkway which taught me about things I never even knew. This week we have been learning about water systems, like rivers, that supply and sustain civilizations. Just the other day I did research on the Nile river and learned that people use the Nile river like Philadelphia uses the Schuylkill and Delaware river.

On Tuesday we worked on learning about different river systems. I researched th Ganges River. I learned about it's pollution which is similar to the schuyllkill river. It is actually considered the dirtiest river in the world. After that I saw a documentary on Philadelphia and the different programs used to better this city. Starting from it's creation to it's remodeling of the houses, a lot has been done over the years.

Monday we did a couple things. We watched a couple videos on social networking sites. Very informative on how businesses advertise less on television and more on the internet. After that we went out to see how a certain are of Temple was used. It was surprising to see how many different ways this area was used. Fianlly our mentor interviewed us one by one. He explained what and how an interview works and how it is important to be truthful but also be what the job calls for. After all that the day was over. All in all I did well on the interview and the day went pretty smooth

On thursaday our group did the scavenger hunt around the campus. We saw different sites and buildings we already knew of. We also did a project on google maps where we mapped out important landmarks around our neighborhoods. Turns out I have a lot that distinguishes my community
